Our Junior Kindergarten program is a unique program offered at Belle’s and Beau’s Academy. It is specifically designed for those children who have already had at least one year of Pre-Kindergarten but have missed the cutoff date for Kindergarten or have chosen to delay the start of Kindergarten for one year. In this program, there is a strong academic emphasis along with continuing to allow the children to learn through play and their social environment. The Junior Kindergarten classroom is a full day program with an academic schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We have adopted The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, which is a research based program. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool allows the children to grow and learn through “studies” about topics that are related to their everyday experiences. Our Junior Kindergarten teachers will focus on positive interactions, social-emotional development, play to support their learning, as well as teacher-family relationships. The Junior Kindergarten classroom has a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated activities throughout the day. The children will have opportunities to participate in group meetings, small group, choice time, and limited choices. The Junior Kindergarten child is very active and there is a combination of active engagement along with quiet play. Though the Junior Kindergarten child is no longer napping in the classroom, a “quiet time” for half an hour happens in the afternoon. During “quiet time” the children are asked to participate in quiet activities such as individual reading, puzzles, and iPads to allow their bodies and brains some time to relax. Children learn best through hands on activities, therefore worksheets are not sent home. In order to build the home/school connection, information is posted each day in the classroom to let you know about the activities that have taken place during the day. During our summer months, the Junior Kindergarten classroom transforms into a summer camp program. The children go on two field trips a week and swim every afternoon at our onsite pool. During the summer months, all children in our Junior Kindergarten classrooms must be five years of age. At times there may be recommended hands on activities posted for you and your child to complete at home to reinforce the skills they are learning at school.
“Being aware of how each child learns differently.
I love hearing from the teachers exactly how my child learns and having it be so accurate.”
